Edge-banding Veneer and Wrapping Veneer

Veneer is a thin sheet of wood with a distinct grain, obtained by slicing or peeling the log. Through our parner firm FURWA, we offer veneer edge bands and profile-wrapping veneers made from natural or reconstituted wood. Available from stock or custom-made, with optional FSC® certification and a selection of premium wood species.

Tips for Quality Edge Processing

Accurate information is key to high-quality execution, which is why we are here to answer your questions.

What is the recommended temperature for the workshop?

The recommended temperature of the workshop is between 18 - 22°C. A (too) low temperature affects the shorter open time of the hot melt adhesive, which causes the adhesive to set too quickly even before the pressure roller presses the tape onto the panel. The result is a poor-quality adhesive joint or deviation of the edge tape.

Why veneer edge bandings are fleeced?

Thin veneer edge bandings are classic, singe-layer veneer edge bandings produced in thickness up to 0,9mm. A fleece backing is aplied to make veneer more flexible and resistante to subsequent mechanical stress to avoid spliting and cracking during edge processing, The appropriate grammage and color of fleece backing is selected depending to the purpose of the edge banding e.g. for staright application, softforming od door rebate application.

What are wrapping veneers?

Wrapping veneers are special produced veneers in rolls intended for profile wrapping wood-based, aluminium or plastic profiles. The veneer quality is selected exactly to customer requirements and specification to make sure that the technical treatment is suited to customer needs and production system. The thickness of veneer is crucial factor for outer radiuses to avoid splitting or cracking. Wrapping veneers can be sanded up to 0,30mm depend on the profile sketch, the result is extremely flexible material that can be processed effectively. The fleece backing is crucial too for extremely small inner radiuses which have to be formed properly without cracking. Depend on the profile sketch, wrapping veneers are fleeced with 30g or 50g paper fleece or even double fleece.

Can we offer end-graim veneer edge bandings?

End grain veneer edge bandings are multilayer edge bandings with visible annual rings visually to the look of real sawn timber. End grain edge bandings are delivered on demand in several veneer species as European oak, Smoked oak, American walnut, Beech, Core beech, Maple, Ash, Birch, Larch, Chestnut, Cherry and Elm. The thickness of the production ranges starts from 1,2mm thickness up to 3,4mm while the width of staves moves from 45mm to 150mm. For the blind layers we can offer real veneer or reconstructed veneer (fine-line). Due to special edge construction end grain edging does not splinter during processing.

Can we offer veneer edge bandings produced in wage out of customer veneer?

Yes. We can offer veneer edge bandings produced in-wage, out of customer-owned veneer. Raw veneer in bundles is delivered by customer and produced to the edge bandings according to customer requiement and specificatiom.

Can we offer veneer edge banding for door rebates?

Yes. For door-rebate procesing, we provide veneer edge bandings made from carefully selected high-quality veneers. By sanding to a thickness of approximately 0.38mm, fleece backing with a grammage of 30g, 50g or double fleecing, we achieve flexibility and optimal adjustment to door-rebate details. Upon request, veneer edge badnings are available with or without EVA hot-melt precoating or can be lacquered with flexible PU or UV water-based lacqueres.

Can we offer edge veneer for edge processing of small radii with BAZ technology?

Yes. For BAZ edge processing we can offer special produced multilayer veneer edge bandings produced with carefully selected higher quality veneer grade and special used fabric or fleece inlay for an extreme tensile strength without cracking during edge processing. Blind veneer layers for multilayer veneer edge bandings are selected in the right veneer colour in order to avoid frame effect after edge processing.

Can veneer edge bandings and wrapping veneers be lacquered?

Yes. Upon request, we offer veneer edge bandings lacquered with UV lacquer for straight edge processing or UV FLEX lacquer for softforming and door-rebate edge processing as well wrapping veneers. The color and lacquer gloss level is adjusted according to the customer needs and specification.

Can veneer edge bandings and wrapping veneers be FSC certified?

Yes. Veneer edge bandings and wrapping veneers can be FCS certified upon request. We keep on stock FSC certified veneer edge bandings in Oak in all availabe standard thickensses, while other FSC certified wood species are available on demand. FSC certification ensures that the veneer comes from sustainably and responsibly managed forests, protecting the environment, respecting workers' rights and local communities and preserving biodiversity.

How should veneer edge andings be stored?

It is recommended to store veneer edge bandings and wrapping in a climate-controlled environment with an optimal relative humidity of 50-60% and a temperature of about 20°C. Under such storage conditions, the veneer retains its properties for high-quality edge and wapping process without cracking and splitting.
