Tips for Quality Edge Processing

Accurate information is key to high-quality execution, which is why we are here to answer your questions.
What is the recommending temperature for the workshops?
The recommended temperature for the workshops is between 18 - 22°C. Too low temperature affects to shorter open time of the adhesive to set too quickly before the pressure roller presses the edging onto the panel. The result is a poor, non-quality glue joins or, in the wors case, edging delamination from the panel.
What should be the temperature of the workpieces and the edgings?
We recommend considering the temperature of the adhesive in the glue pot according to the technical data sheet of the glue manufacturer. We also recommend measuring the temperature with the IR meter of the glue on the application roller, as this can deviate considerably from the temperature in the glue pot. Too low temperature on the application roller can affect the open time of the glue is too short, the glue sets too quickly, the results is a non-quality glue joint or edging delamination from the panel.
What is the correct adhesive temperature in the glue pot and on the roller?
We recommend following the adhesive temperature guidelines from the manufacturer’s technical data sheet. It's also advisable to measure the roller temperature with an IR thermometer, as it can significantly differ from the glue pot. Low roller temperature reduces open time and may lead to poor adhesive bonding.
Correcting the position and pressure on the pressure zone.
Before edge processing, we recommend measuring the thickness of the edging with a micrometer and correcting the position and pressure on the pressure zone accordingly. Inadequate position of the pressure rollers and insufficient pressure of the pressure rollers can affect the low-quality glue joint.
What is the right glue amount of application on the panel?
The glue amount of application on the panel depends on the type of glue and also workpiece (chipboard, MDF etc.). EVA hot melts with fillers generally require a larger amount of application, app. 250g/m2, hot melts without fillers require a smaller amount of application, app. 200g/m2. It is important to apply uniform glue amount on the edge of the workpiece. We recommend the distance of the application roller from the workpiece app. 0,1mm to 0,2mm. The application roller shouldn’t touch the workpiece.
Pull-off test
Before starting edge processing, we recommend a pull-off test. Tear off ABS edge banding from the workpiece by hand and visually inspect the glue joint. A high-quality glue joint is achieved when the remains of the hot melt are unfirm applied to the workpiece together with the remains of the splinters.
How often is necessary to clean glue pot and the application roller?
We recommend weekly cleaning of the glue pot and the application roller with HENKEL CLEANER 4 usually end of working week.
